Death
Charles William Curtis Died 5 May 1905, Age 81,       1905 2Q Dover 2a 607

Dover Express, Friday, May 5, 1905,                         Deaths
Death of Mr. C. W. Curtis.
We regret to record the death of Mr. C. W. Curtis, J.P., of Kearsney Abbey, Dover, which took place this morning five minutes after midnight.
Mr. C. W. Curtis, son of Mr. Charles Berwick Curtis of London was born at Baleer St., London, in 1824, therefore he had attained his eighty-first year.   He was educated at Harrow, and in the year 1850 married Henrietta Francisca, the daughter of William R. Robson Esq., of London.   Mr. Charles William Curtis was a J.P., for the county of Kent, and since he took up his residence at Kearsney Abbey has acted in the Wingham Division on the County Bench at Wingham and Dover.   Mr. Curtis's appearance was that of a fine old English gentleman, his cherry face and well developed features being an index to a powerful mind.   A considerable portion of his life, prior to the purchase of the Kearsney Abbey Estate, was devoted to commerce, he being connected with the gun powder manufacture.   At Kearsney he was beloved by his neighbours, rich and poor.   To the latter he was a kind friend.   The Abbey and its pleasant grounds liberally kept up, is a great feature of the village.

The Times, Saturday, May 6, 1905                         DEATHS
CURTIS - On the 5th inst., at Kearsney Abbey, near Dover, Charles William Curtis, aged 81.   Funeral at River Church, Kearsney, on Tuesday the 9th inst., at 2:15 p.m.   Train leaves Victoria Station (S.E. and C. Railway) at 10:45 a.m. for Kearsney.   Friends, kindly accept this (the only) intimation.
Dover Express, Friday, May 12, 1905                 FUNERALS
The funeral of Mr. Charles William Curtis took place at River churchyard on Tuesday afternoon.   The cortege left Kearsney Abbey at 2.15 p.m. and proceeded along Lower Road towards the church where a large number of inhabitants of River and Dover had gathered to pay their last respects to one whom they had learned to appreciate.   The service, both in the church, where it was conducted by Rev. Dr. Statham, Vicar of River and at the graveside, where the officiating clergyman was the Revd. Malcolm Baynes, Rector of Ringwould, was most impressive.   The congregation was a large one those present including  . . . about 100 representatives of the firm Messrs. Curtis's & Harvey Ltd., manufacturers of explosives from London, of which the deceased was Chairman.
  The mourners included:
Col. C.H. Curtis, Mr. T.R. Curtis and Mr. H.W. Curtis (sons); Mrs. J. T. Braine, & Mrs. W. H. Fowle, (daughters). . . . et al.
Mr. Curtis was for some time Chairman of River Parish Council, where his business capabilities and energies were very much appreciated.   Owing to his health, however, he was compelled to resign his office some years ago.   His liberality for various charities has been greatly valued, it being his custom every year to entertain the Sunday School in the grounds at their annual festival.
