General Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond was born on 9 December 1764, the son of George Henry Lennox and Louisa Kerr, in Scotland. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1789 in the service of the 35th Foot. In 1789 he dueled with Frederick, Duke of York. He held the office of Member of Parliament for Chichester between 1790 and 1806. He held the office of Aide-de-Camp to King George III between 1795 and 1798. He gained the rank of Major-General in 1798. He was Colonel of the 35th Foot between 1803 and 1819. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1805. Upon the death of Charles Lennox, the 3rd Duke of Richmond, who died without legitimate issue on 29 December 1806, he succeeded to all the titles. |
He succeeded to the titles of 4th Earl of March, 4th Duke of Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond, 4th Baron of Settrington, 4th Earl of Darnley, 4th Lord of Torboultoun, and 4th Duc d'Aubigny, de Berri [France]. He held the office of High Steward of Chichester in 1807. He was Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland between 1807 and 1813. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter in 1812. He held the office of Governor of Hull between 1813 and 1814. He gained the rank of General in 1814. He held the office of Governor of Plymouth between 1814 and 1819. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Sussex between 1816 and 1819. He held the office of Governor-General of Canada between 1818 and 1819. |
