Ophthalmic Surgeon Well Known in Hull

HIS WORK FOR THE INFIRMARY
The death has occurred at Southport of Dr. Arthur Legge Roe who, for many years, was well known in Hull both in private practice and in connection with the work of Hull Royal Infirmary and Hull and Sculcoates Dispensary.
Dr. Roe, who was 82, died at the home of his daughter, 4 Preston Road, Southport, where he had lived since he left Hull a few years ago.
Dr. Roe was a genius in operative work upon the eyes, and introduced many things in ophthalmic surgery. He opened the way to eye operations and was responsible for the introduction of collosol argentum. He was a great pioneer in medical research work.
Dr. Roe was also one of the greatest dry fly fishermen, and was well known throughout Yorkshire, and was affectionately called the Otter, He was the oldest member of the Rydale club.
His private practice, when in Hull was in Pryme street. He was educated at Queen's College, Belfast and the Royal College   of   Surgeons   in Ireland.   It was in 1873 that he
obtained his LRCS, while five years later he secured his LRCP. At the royal College of Surgeons in Ireland he was a demonstrator in anatomy.
Dr. Roe then joined the Royal Navy, became surgeon on HMS Research and HMS Northumberland, and among his appointments while still in the Service was that of surgeon to the Royal Naval Hospital at Plymouth.
Later he came to Hull as resident medical surgeon to the Hull and Sculcoates Dispensary. He became ophthalmic surgeon, and opened an ophthalmic department to the Dispensary. He was appointed honorary assistant ophthalmic surgeon to Hull Royal Infirmary in 1900, and honorary ophthalmic surgeon in 1909.
In 1914 he retired. During the war he joined the Naval Hospital in Hull.
At the Baker-street Dispensary he was appointed house surgeon in November 1886, resigning the position in December 1895.
In January 1896 he became the honorary ophthalmic surgeon and undertook this work voluntarily until 1909, when he continued as honorary ophthalmic surgeon with an honorarium. This position he held until he resigned in 1932. About this time he left the city for Southport.
The funeral is to take place in Hull on Wednesday, at 2pm, at the Northern Cemetery.
