Alexander was born on 6 April 1838, the son of Alexander Rhind and Euphemia Walker, in Forgan, Fife, Scotland. He immigrated to New York City, in 1854, where he married Marion Jessie Mackenzie, in 1868. After their untimely death in 1883, the children were sent back to the UK.
