William was born about 1771, the son of Samuel Cole, at Guildford, Surrey. He entered Magdalen Hall, Oxford, at age 17, on 17 November 1788. He received his B.A. in 1792, and M.A. in 1797. He was Rector of West Clandon, and Vicar of Wonersh, Surrey.
