Dr. William Haddock Dalrymple          1856-1925
William was born on 23 April 1856, the son of Thomas Dalrymple and Mary Eleanora Haddock, at Stranraer, Wigtown, Scotland.
Prior to entering veterinary medicine, he was in banking and later, employed by the Bank of South Africa.   He graduated from the Glasgow Veterinary College and received membership in the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons on July 23, 1886.   After marrying in 1891, the family immigrated to America, settling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.   He joined the faculty at the Louisiana State University on September 16, 1889, as a professor of comparative medicine
(later as professor of veterinary science) and as the first veterinarian of the Agricultural Experiment Station.
Dr. Dalrymple had a persuasive personality, a prodigious capacity for work, a love of teaching and research, a visionary concept of the future of veterinary medicine and a strong sense of civic duty.   He was a man of many and diverse interests and is remembered as an educator, researcher, veterinarian, world traveler, banker, administrator, horseman, athlete, author, public servant, humanitarian and a leader in organized veterinary medicine.
