Sunderland Echo, Tuesday, Nov 6, 1923               DEATHS
THE LATE MRS ELIZABETH
HENDERSON
One of Sunderland's kindliest residents, Mrs Elizabeth Henderson, was buried at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery yesterday, and in charitable circles she will be very much missed.   Mrs Henderson was in her 95th year, and to within a few hours of her death was as well, apparently, as many women of 70, and always personally attended to business and domestic affairs in connexion with her household.
A native of Lowestoft, Mrs Henderson came to Sunderland at the age of eight and married Mr Thomas Henderson, one of the old standards of the town, at St George's Church in July 1850.   Mrs Henderson was the oldest member of the congregation and was associated with St. George's when it was housed in Smyrna Chapel and later in Villiers Street.   She had the distinction of robing every minister at St. George's in Stockton Road except the new minister, the Rev. S. R. MacLauchlan, and
in this case an injury to the knee alone kept her away.
A keen skilful needle-woman, Mrs Henderson's work was in great demand in connexion with such events as Infirmary bazaars, and help generously given to the Royal Institute for the Blind must be recorded.   All through the War Mrs Henderson held a monthly tea for Service men stationed in Sunderland, and provided a great quantity of underware for the men.   This was the work of her own needle.
Mrs Henderson did not take an active part in political life except in so far as it related to her duties as a Primrose Dame.   Mr Henderson passed away in 1903 after 50 years of happy married life.   He was the oldest member of the Phoenix Lodge of Freemasons.   He and his wife lived for many years at 23 Holmeside.   This was the first house built in that thoroughfare.
For the past 31 years Mrs Henderson lived at Willow Brook, Ashbrook, and of a family of 12, there are alive four sons and four daughters
