Thomas Atkinson                               1856-1913
Thomas was born 1 May 1856, in Nitshill, Renfrewshire, Scotland, the son of James Atkinson and Margaret Ramsay. Thomas was a mining engineer, popularly known as "Blaster Atkinson" because of his proclivity for sinking mine shafts using dynamite. He was also quite adept with a rifle. The Rifle Association awarded him the Queen's Prize at Bisley in 1877 as the best shot in Britain. Thomas married Margaret Shields   Mitchell on 1 June 1881, and they had eight children. They relocated to County Durham some time after one of their children died as a result of an accident at school, and Thomas began to drink at the family pub, The Railway Inn, at Nitshill. Margaret's mother had inherited the inn from her father. Thomas died in West Hartlepool, aged 57, of spinal disease on 19 November 1913.
Margaret Shields Mitchell                 1862-1951
Margaret was born on 2 June 1862, in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, the daughter of John Mitchell and Margaret Shields Walker. She was actually born into considerable affluence after her mother sold "The Stag Inn" to the Clyde Trust and Margaret  was  sent  to  a  private  school  in  Edinburgh.  She   married Thomas Atkinson the day before her nineteenth birthday and bore him eight children. Their eldest daughter died of cerebral meningitis aged three, and their fourth child Ellen, died from burns received during an accident at school.
