Robert Bowne Minturn                           1805-1866
Robert was born on 16 November 1805, the son of William Minturn and Sarah Bowne, in New York City. He received an English education, and, though compelled by the death of his father to leave school at the age of fourteen and enter a counting-house, spent his leisure in study, so that he gained an extensive acquaintance with general literature.
He was received into partnership in 1825 with Charles Green, whose clerk he had been, and in 1830 entered the firm of Fish and Grinnell, which was afterward known as Grinnell, Minturn and Co. He declined all public office except the post of commissioner of emigration, which he accepted from a wish to secure the rights of emigrants.
He was an active manager of many charitable associations in New York city, aided in establishing the Association for improving the condition of the poor, and was a founder of St. Luke's hospital. He was the first president of the Union league club. He was a shipping magnate and philanthropist.
He bought a 173-acre estate in Hastings, New York in 1857, "Locust Wood," in what is now Zinsser Park. He owned "Flying Cloud," the fastest clipper ship in the world. Robert and his wife Anna were very instrumental in the creation of Central Park, in New York City.
Anna Mary Wendell                               1811-
Anna Mary was born about 1811, the daughter of John Lansing Wendell, a partner in Grinnell, Minturn and Co.
