Richard Wace                                       1842-1920
  Richard was born on 16 July 1842, the son of Richard Henry Wace and Eulielia Gray, in Goring, Oxfordshire.   He was educated at Marlborough, Repton and Kings College, London, and the Royal military Academy, Woolwich.   He was Commissioned in the Royal Artillery on 19 January 1864, and Joined "B" Battery, 2nd Division Depot Brigade RA on 20 February 1864.   He Embarked for Calcutta India on the Conflict arriving in October 1864.   He led a detachment via Delhi, Jhelum, Rawalpindi to Attock from November 1864 to January 1865.   He joined the Heavy Field Battery 3/4 Brigade R.A. at Peshawar on 25 February 1865, and was Appointed Commisary of Ordnance, Peshawar Fort Depot.   He Returned to England between in mid 1867, and then was Posted back to Fort William, Calcutta in November 1868.   He married Ellen Elizabeth Prideaux in 1870.   He was Seconded to the Survey department of the Government of India, but was Invalided back to England after severe Dysentry in May 1873.   He was Posted back to Calcutta as Assistant Superintendent Ordnance Factories from 13 May 1874 to October 1877.   He married Gertrude Mary Candy in November 1875 in Poonah, Bengal, India.   He was Given Command of No.1 Bombay Mountain Battery at Rajkote in October 1877.   He Took over Command of No. 2 Mountain Battery, on service in the Afghanistan War.   Twice mentioned in Despatches, from December 1878 to February 1881.   He was Awarded Brevet Major on 22 November 1879.   He was Invalided back to England in February 1881.   He Passed Firemasters Course at Woolwich. Obtained Inspector of Warlike Stores and Firemasters Certificate from the Royal Gun Factories, Royal Carriage Department, and the Royal Laboratory in 1882.   He was Appointed Superintendent of the Foundry and Shell factory at Cossipore Calcutta from September 1882 to October 1886.   He was Posted to UK on Special Duties concerning the introduction of the manufacture of steel and solid drawn cartridge cases, from 1886 to 1889.   He was Appointed Deputy Director of Ordnance in 1889, and Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1890.   He was Appointed Inspector General of Ordnance in 1893, and Promoted to Colonel in 1894.   He was Appointed Director General of Ordnance from 1897 to 1902.   He was Made Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1897.   He was Promoted to Major General, and returned to England as the representative of India on the Ordnance Committee in 1902.   He was Appointed Colonel Commandant of the Royal Artillery in 1913.   He had the title "Director General of Ordnance".
