SURGEON-GENERAL BENSON
Surgeon-General Percy Hugh Benson, late Indian Medical Service, who died on Sunday at his home, St. Aubins, Jersey, at the age of 81, was one of the last survivors of the staff of King Edward when, as Prince of Wales, he made an extensive tour in India close upon 60 years ago.
A son of Lieutenant-General R. Benson, F.L.S., of the Indian Army, he was born in London on February 1, 1852. From Shrewsbury School he went to St. Bartholomew's Hospital, where he won the Treasurer's prize for senior practical anatomy. He was prosector of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1871, gained his membership in 1873, and in the same year graduated M.B. and C.M. at Aberdeen with honours. He passed fourth in the competitive I.M.S. examination of 1874.
He was in medical charge of the Prince of Wale's camp in the autumn of the following year, and next did good service in Mysore in fighting the great famine which took heavy toll of life in Southern India in 1876-7. In 1881 he was selected to be Civil Surgeon and Superintendent of the jail, Mysore, and on the rendition of the State of the ruling family he was made Medical Officer to the Maharajah.
In 1903 he went to Burma as Inspector-General of Hospitals and Principal Medical Officer of the Province. In 1908 he was made Surgeon-General with the Government of Madras, and in that capacity was a member of the Legislature. He was made Honorary Surgeon to the Viceroy, and retired in 1911, being awarded a good service pension. In the War he volunteered for medical service on the Western Front, and was mentioned in dispatches. He was twice married, and had two sons and four daughters.
