John Wilson was born about 1825, the son of William Wilson and Agnes Whitham, in Handel, Yorkshire.   He married Sarah Martha Walker on 12 September 1850, and after her death in 1859, married Matilda Hodgson.   John and his younger brother William set up a timber business in Sunderland, J&W Wilson, at the north end of Wearmouth Bridge in 1851.   The business was twice the scene of fires.   In December 1878, the timber yard and saw mills were destroyed by fire causing damage estimated at £20,000 and in March 1890 was another similarly large fire.

Sarah Martha was born 19 December 1828, the daughter of Samuel Walker and Mary Ambler, at Hunslet, Yorkshire.
I have found the following children.

Matilda was born about 1827, in Sunderland. She first married William Sharp Hodgson of Houghton le Spring, in 1854. After his death, she married John Wilson on 10 October 1860.
