Lt.-Gen. Sir James Thomas Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, 7th Baron Brudenell of Stonton, 7th Baronet Brudenell of Deene.
His Lordship was born on 16 October 1797, the son of Robert Brudenell and Penelope Anne Cooke, at Hambleden, Buckinghamshire.
He succeeded to the above titles upon the death of his father on 14 August 1837. Having no issue, at his death on 28 March 1868, his titles were passed on to a distant cousin, The Most Honourable Sir George William Frederick Brudenell-Bruce, 2nd Marquess of Ailesbury, KG, PC, (1804-1878). |
Lord Cardigan led the famous Charge of the Light Brigade, during the Battle of Balaclava on October 25, 1854 during the Crimean War.
It is best remembered as the subject of a famous poem entitled The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
The charge was made by the Light Brigade of the British cavalry, consisting of the 4th and 13th Light Dragoons, 17th Lancers, and the 8th and 11th Hussars, all under the command of Major General the Earl of Cardigan. Read the details of this historic event. |
