James Palmer Budd 1803-1883 James was born on 31 August 1803, the son of Edward Budd and Isabella Palmer, at Liskeard, Cornwall. A letter dated 1824 was written by James' father (Edward) to John Henry Vivian the son of his good friend John Vivian requesting them to find James a position in their concern. James was offered his first job that of bookkeeper. He was 22 years old. I believe, from following him through all his letters, that he worked for Vivian & Sons Copperworks from 1824 - 1841. He became an agent and travelled to various ports LONDON, LIVERPOOL buying and selling. In these years he moved from Singleton to Swansea where I have found him living in a house and renting stables. "He came to Ystalyfera when he was 35 years of age; a tall, dark, slim, smart man with a light graceful gait. A handsomer man would be difficult to find. He had a deep bass, sonorous voice and a quick intelligent mind with a thorough grasp of the fundamental principles of metallurgy and the economics of production and distribution. This well-bred and good looking man fell in love with a rich young lady thirteen years his junior, a Miss Emily Rawson. After their marriage they lived a happy and very useful life at Ynysydarren House, Ystalyfera. As J. P. Budd played a dominant part in the industrial and social life of the village, so Mrs. Budd took a leading part in the educational and religious life of the community." Read more about his life |
Emily was born about 1815, the daughter of Thomas Samuel Rawson and Sarah Colbeck Holdsworth, at Halifax, Yorkshire. I have not identified any children. |
