James Hall                                             1780-1828
James was born on 4 August 1780, the son of James Hall and Mary Cowper, at Monkwearmouth Shore, County Durham. James commenced shipbuilding at Monkwearmouth in 1801. In 1816 the Laing brothers left the Bridge yard to go to Southwick, and James took over the Bridge yard. By 1827, his son, George Wilkin, who had joined the firm, took over the business, and by 1836, the firm became the Hall Brother's as George's younger brother William Joseph joined the firm.
Both George Wilkin and William Joseph married daughters of Samuel Moore, who was a shipowner, and also into the
pottery business. Samuel Moore also had a son, William, whose son, John Storey Moore led the shipbuilding business in it's final period of operation. Among the many fine ships turned out on the west side of the bridge were the Daphne (1854), of 800 tons, and the Jane Temperley (1856), of 998 tons. The facilities of the Halls included a wet dock, a floating dock and a three crane wharf. In addition to building, the Halls did a great volume of repair work The Halls were in the shipbuilding industry for 60 years, although they were not building continuously.
