Hugh Melville Critz 1900-1980 Hugh was born on 17 September 1900, the son of Hugh Critz and Julia Gillespie, in Starkville, Mississippi. Hugh played baseball for Mississippi State from 1916 to 1920. He began his Major League baseball career in 1924 with the Cincinnati Reds. He left them in 1930 and then played for the New York Giants, ending his big league playing career in 1935.
