Hugh was born on 23 February 1878, the son of George Nicolas Channer and Annie Isabella Watson, at Dharmsala, West Bengal, India. Just a few months after his marriage, he was seriously wounded in both legs and the chest at Gallipoli.

Emily was born on 28 April 1882, the daughter of Laurent Cornet.
