THE LATE HON'BLE HERBERT WACE
Colombo papers announce the death at 9:15 p.m. on Monday, May 29, of Mr. Herbert Wace, C.M.G., Acting Colonial Secretary of Ceylon. Mr. Wace's last appearance in his official capacity was on Tuesday, the 22nd- a week before - when he attended a meeting of the Executive Council called in connection with the Telephone Commission's report. The sitting was a lengthy one - lasting over three hours. The next day the first symptoms of the malady, (dysentery) which was to prove fatal, manifested themselves. It was reported that he was slightly indisposd and there was not the remotest plea that his ailment was serious. Not for a long interval has the death taken place in Ceylon of such a high official, the death of Mr. Lionel F. Lee, Treasurer having been the last instance. The late Mr. Herbert Wace was the youngest son of the Rev. R. H. Wace of Wadhurst, Sussex and was educated at Westminster. He had two brothers in the Army. One of them (retired) is Major-General Richard Wace, C.B. who was Director General of Ordinance in India till 1902 and the other is Col. Ernest Charles Wace, D.S.O. who had also a distinguished military career and was decorated for services in the Indian campaign. The Late Mr. Wace came out in 1873 and his whole service career was in Ceylon.
H.E. the Governor came down from Nuwara Eliya the same night. He was much affected by the death of his colleague. In fact H.E. who was aware of Mr. Wace's serious illness, had specially come down to relieve the latter of his duties.
The Funeral was attended with official honours. H.E. and the members of the Legislative Council attended and the streets were lined with Police.
