George always went by the name "Sam", possible to differentiate himself from his father.
He was born about 1890, the son of George Elliot Coxon and Clara Harding, at Wood Green, London.
He served in World War I in the Royal Flying Corps, the forerunner to the Royal Air Force, which was formed on April 1, 1918.
He survived a plane crash, that involved serious head injuries.
These aggravated earlier injuries he had had in childhood falling over a rope onto a concrete floor.
Those closest to him always thought the crash injuries changed him.
