Francis was born around 1874. It cannot be certain if Francis even knew when and where he was born, or who his parents were. He first appears as a Nephew of the Dotterill family as Francis Graham, in the 1881 census. He is subsequently adopted into the family. At some point prior to the 1891 census, he joins the Hampshire Royal Engineers Militia. He enlisted in the Army, Royal Engineers, for 3 years active duty followed by 9 years of reserve, on 26 May 1891, and assigned the Regimental number 25210. He lists his age as 18 years and 3 months. He lists his trade as a boatman, and brass finisher. He served in South Africa from 28 Feb 1900 to 16 Oct 1902, earning two medals with clasps. |
His active duty status was extended to 7 years, later to 12 years, and later at his request, he decided to stay on for 21 years.
He later decides to request a discharge, and is discharged at Bristol on 28 Jan 1905, after 13 years, 248 days of total service.
After their fifth child died in 1913, Francis and Matilda had some disagreements, whereupon Matilda walked out on the family, and has not been seen since.
He enlisted his services again on 4 March 1915, to serve in WW1, Royal Engineers, Signal Corps, and was assigned Regimental number 69613. He listed his age as 40 years and 6 months, and his trade as a line telegraphist. He was discharged on 27 March 1919 after the war. |
