John was born on 16 December 1903, the son of Major Arthur Fitzhugh James Cox and Janett Hester Younger, at Crossroads, St. Andrew, Jamaica. His mother was the daughter of Sir Henry Johnston Younger, of Benmore, Argyllshire, Chairman of William Younger and Co., Edinburgh, Brewers.
John was a Major in the Royal Scotts Fusilliers.
