Claude was born om 14 March 1855, the son of Claude Bowes-Lyon, 13th Earl of Strathmore and Frances Dora Smith.

The Right Hon. Nina Cecilia, Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne, was born 11 September 1862, the daughter of Reverend Charles William Frederick Cavendish-Bentinck and Caroline Louisa Burnaby.
