The Wigtownshire Free Press, Thursday, May 17, 1888   OBITUARY
  At Hightown Kirkcolm?? on the 9th inst Andrew Agnew aged 99 years.
The Late Mr. Agnew. - One of the last links in the chain that connects the present with the past century, was snapped last week by the death of Mr. Agnew High Portencallie. This venerable gentleman, who has just completed his 99th year, was one of the best known and most respected tenant farmer in the county. Born before the French revolution - in the prime of his manhood at the battle of Waterloo - Mr Agnew saw many and great changes in his long life, and in nothing, more than agriculture of this country, of which no better example can be given than his own farm ???? present state of co???? and its stock of Ayrshire cows and Clydesdales. It is not now easy to believe that when Mr. Agnew took
possession of the farm in the early part of this century, it only kept nine cows and a few head of horses. Mr. Agnew was well known as a judge of farm stock, particularly of Galloway cattle and Clydesdale horses. He had frequently the honour of supplying Galloway cattle to the Royal Herd at Windsor. A staunch adherent of the Church of Scotland, and probably her oldest office bearer. So late as the last communion in January Mr. Agnew took his seat at the table as he had done for more than three-quarters of a century. A rare example of careful industry and perseverance, it was his rule, till almost the day he died, to walk through every field in the farm once a day, and inspect every head of stock he possessed.
