THE FAMILY TRAVELED TO NEW ZEALAND

[ Two different newspapers describe the Court Case providing a Divorce ]

Auckland Star, Friday, 13 May 1921
THE DIVORCE COURT

CATT THE WILD CATT
Drunkenness, cruelty, and desertion were the allegations brought by Frances Freda Catt (Mr E. J. Stewart) against her husband, Alfred Catt, formerly an employee of the Auckland Gas Works.   The petitioner stated that the marriage took place in England in 1893 and there were five children.   In 1912 the whole family came to New Zealand, petitioner's hope being that the respondent, among new associates, would give up drinking to excess.   His conuct did improve in Auckland, but only for three months.   He generally came home under the influence of intoxicants, and on several occasions had threatened to kill the family and hang or poison himself..   Once he actually put a rope around his neck, and once when he threatened violence, he had a razor in his hand.   In March, 1916 the petitioner and the children left him.   A decree nisi was granted.
New Zealand Herald, Saturday, 14 May 1921
MARRIAGES DISSOLVED

In supporting her position for a divorce from Alfred Catt, Frances Catt (Mr Stewart) and members of her family stated that the respondent frequently became drunk and threatened to cut the throats of his wife and children. They left England in 1912 to see if the respondent would behave himself any better in New Zealand.   He was alright for three months, but then gave way to drink again and renewed his threats.   Finally in 1916 he left home, and she had not heard of him nor seen him since.   The Judge granted the decree nisi.

Now, being a single man again, Alfred marries again.
