Alan Ayre Smith                                    1876-1957
Alan was born on 19 August 1876, the son of Dr. Robert Ayre Smith M. D. and Catherine Jane Clark, at Sunderland, County Durham. He was educated at Durham University, and gained his degree in Chemistry and Physics.
He gained fame as an English international rugby union forward who played club rugby for Guy's Hospital. He also played international rugby for the British Isles team on its 1899 tour of Australia.
He completed his medical training at Guy's Hospital in London. In 1900, as part of the British efforts during the Boer War.

Meta was born on 7 April 1881, the daughter of Thomas Graham Turnbull and Elizabeth Ann Morgan, at Southwick, County Durham.
